I work in public relations… and no, I’m not like Samantha Jones.
It’s hard to tell whether we chose the PR life, or if the PR life chose us. Either way, we’re happy to be here! We are, proudly, superheroes in heels. We can handle basically anything that life throws at us. As long as happy hour follows the particularly stressful days, we’re all set.
We possess many traits – whether or not we’d like to confess to them:
Our friends and family have literally no idea what we do.
Probably because it would take too long to explain. Pretty sure my friends think that I sit on Facebook and “drive” our office beer cart.
We make lists. Lots and lots of lists.
I’ve been known to make several to-do lists in a single day. They’re usually color-coded.
We love fabulous office supplies.
Rife Paper Co and Target are very popular around the office. The right tools are absolutely crucial to our success!
When we arrive at the office each morning, we have basically no idea what our day will hold.
We can plan all we want (and we do plan – a lot). But, we never really know what’s going to happen on a given day. We’re just sort of ready for everything. Remember how I said that we’re superheroes? It really, really comes into play here.
We work at one speed: fast.
The work has to be done, and it has to be done now. We are masters of juggling and prioritizing projects. We can conquer seemingly impossible days – and we can do it all while keeping our cool.
We have our own language.
Each agency has its own terms and acronyms, basically foreign to outsiders.
“Let’s circle back on this after DAP. I’ll be in the war room in the Epicenter, so just ping me on Lync.”
We have mastered the English language… and AP Style.
The Oxford Comma is out. We can deal.
Social media defines our lives.
Put us together at a brunch table, and you can bet that we will all be planning our ‘grams immediately.
So does caffeine. And wine.
A world without coffee and rosé is a world that we would really prefer not think about.
We put in the (sometimes long) hours because we genuinely love what we do.
The busier, the better. It’s a crazy industry, but it’s our industry. And we love it.
