Back in the days of “Gravity” and “Love Song” (circa 2008), I decided that Sara is a pretty cool gal. “These songs are pretty catchy,” I decided. “I’m gonna listen to her music sometimes.”
One day, though, I started to listen to her lyrics. I started really paying attention. Sara is an incredibly honest artist. She puts it all on the table, making her super relatable and making her music amazingly therapeutic. After spending some time (or hundreds of hours, like me) listening to her music, you feel like you know her. Like you are best friends who can tell each other anything – and who have told each other everything.
Some of her songs are sad. Like, really sad. But, sometimes life is really sad. Other songs are just plan badass. She is a #girlboss, for sure, and I just soak in her strength whenever I need it.
I saw her perform at a small venue in Urbana, IL in 2011. She had just released her album “Kaleidoscope Heart,” featuring a few of my faves – “Basket Case,” “Gonna Get Over You” and “Breathe Again,” just to name a few. She was just so real. She chatted with us, made tons of jokes and performed incredible music. “You guys, I need psychiatric help,” was a thing that she said. She sang “Gravity” A CAPPELLA, you guys. It was just life changing. That show absolutely solidified my obsession with her.
I can listen to her songs millions of times and never be sick of them. They’re just so interesting, so well done. Looking for an example? Go listen to “Islands.” Listen for the layers – the piano, the beat, the vocals. They work together seamlessly in such Sara fashion. Or, listen to the jazzy, blues-y vibes of “Stay.” Her vocals in that song are just too much.
Overall, I just find Sara to be my guiding light. SO deep. Sorry. Her music just connects with me in an amazingly powerful way. She’s sentimental, but strong. Honest and open. So, in honor of her soon-to-be-released BOOK (I will cry happy tears when I get my hands on a copy), I thought I’d share some of my favorite Sara Bareilles lyrics, in no particular order. Enjoy – and read all of them. Seriously. Then, share your favorite lyrics, too!
“And I’m not the girl that I intend to be / But I dare you, darling, just you wait and see / But this time not for you, just for me.” – Gonna Get Over You
“Everybody’s been there, Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy / Fallen for the fear, And done some disappearing, Bowed down to the mighty / Don’t run, just stop holding your tongue.” – Brave
“No enemies to call my own, no porch light on to pull me home / And where I was is beautiful, because I was free.” – Once Upon Another Time
“I don’t claim to know much / Except soon as you start to make room for the parts that aren’t you, it gets harder to bloom in a garden of love.” – Bottle It Up
“You said, remember that life is not meant to be wasted / We can always be chasing the sun / So fill up your lungs and just run / But always be chasing the sun.” – Chasing the Sun
“She is bright lights and cityscapes, and white lies and cavalcades / And she’ll take all you ever have, but I’m gonna love you / You say maybe it’ll last this time / But I’m gonna love you, you never have to ask / I’m gonna love you ’til you start looking back / I’m gonna love you so right, I wouldn’t need a second chance.” – Bright Lights and Cityscapes
“This is so you’ll know the sound of someone who loves you from the ground / Tonight you’re not alone at all / This is me sending out my satellite call.” – Satellite Call
“The tall blonde lets out a cry of despair, says / Would have cut it myself if I knew men could climb hair / I’ll have to find another tower somewhere and keep away from the windows.” – Fairytale
“It’s time to connect the dots, and draw a different picture up / And paint it with the colors of everything I ever was / Return to the scene of the crime, the day I let the music die / And rewrite the final lines, cause this time I’ll get my little black dress on / And if I put on my favorite song, I’m gonna dance until you’re all gone.” – Little Black Dress
“You love the chase but hate me for the runaround, We’re both just tired of the whole thing. / You tell me what you want, you need, you know you have to have / And I just pretend I’m listening.” – Love on the Rocks
“No ordinary wings I’ll need, the sky itself will carry me back to you / The things I dream that I can do, I’ll open up the moon for you / Just come down soon.” – One Sweet Love
And, my personal favorite:
“Sometimes I can be perfectly sweet, Got this sugary me stuffed in my sleeve / And I talk of ponies and rainbows and things, And I’m just who you want me to be / But like most creatures down here on the ground, I’m composed of the elements moving around / And I grow and change and I shift and I switch / And it turns out I’m actually kind of a bitch / But that only happens when I get provoked by some piece of shit asshole we all sadly know / And I sit and I write while reminding you all, that mean songs are still better than going postal.” – Sweet As Whole
“Squad Goals” is a series of posts in which Haley will detail everyone that she would love to befriend. People who are, basically, killing it.
