I have been putting off this particular Music Monday theme because it’s so stressful! On my all-inclusive “John Mayer” Spotify playlist, there are 189 songs. 15 HOURS of tunes. How am I supposed to narrow that down for just one Music Monday!?
Well, I decided to share the songs with my favorite lyrics, those that have killer music, and of course, the songs that are the whole package.
Here is the full playlist:
LISTEN FOR THE LYRICS
The Heart of Life – “Bad news never had good timing / Then, circle of your friends / Will defend the silver lining.”
Love is a Verb – “Love is a verb, it ain’t a thing / It’s not something you own, it’s not something you scream / When you show me love, I don’t need your words / Yeah love ain’t a thing, Love is a verb.”
No Such Thing – “They love to tell you, stay inside the lines / But something’s better on the other side.”
Stop This Train – “So scared of getting older, I’m only good at being young / So I play the numbers game to find away to say that life has just begun.”
Belief – “Belief is a beautiful armor, but makes for the heaviest sword / Like punching under water, you never can hit who you’re trying for / Some need the exhibition, and some have to know they tried / It’s the chemical weapon for the war that’s raging on inside.”
I’m Gonna Find Another You – Continuum is where John really showcased is blues-y sound. The songs just pack that extra punch, which I really love. This tune is calm yet so sad, perfectly capturing the emotion. (Having been a jazz musician in a previous life, I am obligated to note the killer band in this tune.) I also particularly love the lyric, “I’m gonna sing my way away from blues.” Oh, John, you are such a kidder.
Neon – The guitar in this tune. My goodness he is talented. I included the EP version, as it features the acoustic more clearly than the other.
Bold As Love – THE GUITAR SOLO. Two minutes into the track. All I’m saying is, it is dangerous for me to listen to this song while driving because it becomes a really, really passionate sing-a-long. Also, the triplets throughout the song. You guys know how I feel about triplets. I’m literally sitting here dancing to this tune while I write this.
THE WHOLE PACKAGE
Dear Marie – Oh, I love the sound of his Paradise Valley album. This tune just feels good to listen to. And the lyrics are self-aware and reflective in a very typical John way. “Oh, dear Marie, Tell me do you still believe in me? / Well, I got my dream, but you got a family.” The song builds to that super cool “Ohhh” section, which was unbelievably cool when I saw him live. (Also known as: The best day ever.)
Edge of Desire – This is absolutely one of my favorite tunes. The music and lyrics work together perfectly to convey his desperation and urgency. And can we talk about the bass during the chorus!?
The instrumental break builds and builds, eventually exploding into John singing, “Don’t say a word, just come over and lie here with me / Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see.” I always end up thinking, “Wow OKAY, John, I’m coming, goodness!”
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room – Ahh, this song basically puts me in a trance. When I am stressed, can’t sleep or am just in a mood, I throw on this song and it cancels out everything else. It’s just me, John and some fabulous music.
